Social Freezing – Preserving Fertility for the Future

Social freezing (also known as preventive egg and sperm freezing) is a modern method that allows you to preserve your fertility for the future.
Social freezing allows you to preserve fertility at a time when reproductive cells are naturally best prepared – and use them later when the right time comes.
This gives you the freedom to plan parenthood according to your life situation, without worrying about age-related fertility decline.

What is social freezing?

Social freezing is a preventive program in which eggs or sperm are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of –196 °C. This extremely low temperature halts all biological processes in the cells, including aging and potential genetic damage.
In women, egg quality decreases with age – particularly after age of 35, the risk of chromosomal disorders increases, along with the occurrence of conditions like Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome. Social freezing allows eggs to be preserved at optimal quality before these risks significantly rise.

When and why consider freezing eggs or sperm?

Freezing reproductive cells is worth considering in the following situations:

Medical reasons:

Before cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation)

Before ovarian or testicular surgery

When working in hazardous environments (chemicals, radiation, high stress)

Social and personal reasons:

Delaying parenthood due to education or career

Not having found a suitable partner

Traveling or working abroad

Desire for future certainty

Thus, social freezing represents an important form of infertility prevention.

How does social freezing work for women?

The process for women involves several steps:

1. Hormonal stimulation of the ovaries

Lasts approximately 10–12 days to collect multiple mature eggs.

2. Egg retrieval (OPU)

Performed on an outpatient basis under short general anesthesia.

3. Freezing via vitrification

Performed on an outpatient basis under short general anesthesia

Because eggs are more sensitive than embryos and less tolerant of thawing, it is important to preserve a larger number for the best chances of future conception.

How does sperm freezing work?

The process is simpler and non-invasive for men. After semen collection, sperm are processed in the lab and then frozen in liquid nitrogen. This method is suitable not only for delaying parenthood but also before planned sterilization, hormone therapy, or procedures that could affect fertility.

How long can cells be stored?

Frozen eggs and sperm can be stored long-term without losing quality. However, Czech law stipulates that a woman can use her eggs for fertilization and embryo transfer only up to the age of 49. Storage can be extended upon written request.

Why choose social freezing?

Preserve fertility when cells are of the highest quality

Option to have a child later – without pressure from the biological clock

Protection against infertility caused by illness or treatment

Freedom to decide when the right time for parenthood is
