CD 138

CD 138 (syndecan1) is a protein that accumulates on the surface of plasma cells. If we find an excess of them in the uterine lining, it indicates chronic endometritis – a longterm, often asymptomatic inflammation that can reduce the chance of successful embryo implantation and increase the risk of early miscarriage.

When we recommend testing

  • Multiple failed embryo transfers of goodquality embryos
  • Recurrent miscarriages before the 12th week of pregnancy
  • Unexplained infertility lasting longer than 12 months
  • Irregular spotting or bleeding outside the menstrual cycle

How the test is performed

  1. Sample collection – a thin plastic pipelle is inserted in the uterus to collect an endometrial sample
  2. Laboratory staining – the tissue is stained with an antibody that highlights CD 138; plasma cells are then clearly visible under the microscope
  3. Pathologist evaluation – the number of CD 138positive cells is counted and chronic endometritis is diagnosed.

After the procedure you can go home right away and drive normally.

Treatment of chronic endometritis

  • Targeted antibiotics based on the most common bacterial findings
  • Support of the vaginal microbiome (probiotics, gentle hygiene habits)

Clinical studies show that successful treatment of chronic endometritis can increase the likelihood of embryo implantation.
